Private Eyes – Recognizing 50 Years of Canaada’s (partial) Decriminilization of Homosexuality

2019

Private Eyes was an evening of six short plays by Bilal Baig, Robert Chafe, Veronica Dymond, Falen Johnson, Sonny Mills, Paul David Power, and directed by Sharon King-Campbell created to mark the 50th anniversary of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, widely acknowledged as the first step to decriminalize homosexuality in Canada.

This project was commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor Judy M. Foote in partnership with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and was co-produced by Power Productions and lemonTree creations in Ontario with the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The six works considered the complicated legacy of the 1969 Amendment Act, and highlighted that many within the Intergenerational, Queer, Trans, Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, and Disabled communities continue to struggle for their rights.
